The Red Lodge Museum

Museum | Bristol | England | United Kingdom

The Red Lodge Museum in Bristol is a historic building with over 400 years of history. It houses a unique collection that documents the evolution of the building from a royal reception house in the 16th century to a Victorian reform school for girls in the 19th century. These different phases come to life in the museum's rooms, providing visitors with a fascinating insight into the history and social circumstances of these eras.

One particularly outstanding feature of the museum is the Great Oak Room, which is considered the last fully preserved Elizabethan room in Bristol and gives an impression of the luxurious design of that time. Additionally, there are the original rooms of the building, some of the oldest in Bristol, offering an authentic glimpse into life in the 16th century.

In the 18th century, the building was expanded into a family home, reflecting the changes in bourgeois lifestyle at that time. Later, in 1854, the Red Lodge was converted into a reform school for girls, supported by Mary Carpenter and Lady Byron. This transformation is also an important part of the exhibition, showcasing how social activism and educational ideals of the Victorian era were embodied in this institution.

The museum is a fascinating place that not only tells the history of a single building, but also reflects the social, political, and cultural changes in Bristol and beyond throughout the centuries. It offers visitors the opportunity to delve deep into history and experience the transformation of a house that encompasses many facets of British history.

Overdue review. Lovely historical building. Not pushchair chair or wheelchair friendly as steps, but it is a good place to take well behaved children. I will be back when it re opens.

The building is quite small, but very interesting. Loaded with interesting information and beautiful artefacts. The guides are extremely helpful nice people that know lots of interesting facts. I would suggest this place for well behaved kids only, due to the landscape of the building (lots of stairways).

Loved all of the rooms (especially the top floor as it was original from the Tudor period) and there was a staff member who was so comprehensive in answering all my questions. Fascinating learning about their discovery of the well too! Donation based and there is no pressure put on to make one.

Only took us 40 years to visit, don't leave it that long. Very interesting place in its own right but was originally part of a large estate. I was very confused at the beginning due to misunderstanding the timeline. The guide I spoke to was very patient and took the time to put me right. A couple of hours is long enough if you're short of time. When we visited there were 3 volunteers dressed in clothes of the day, beware they will only represent what is going on in the 17th century. Do check times of opening.

I came here for the Halloween special with my eight year old neice. We both enjoyed it. The actors were brilliant and brought the place to life and were also good at not scaring the kids. There's also a really cool well. It was lovely and I'm so glad we went.

A wonderful place to visit. Visiting involves entering through the small red door on Park Road and immediately going down a flight of stairs. It is then suggested you go up the majestic staircase to the level that has fantastic wood panelled rooms with objects and art works from the Tudor period. You then go back downstairs to the rooms where you started. The well in the small back room is a bit of a treat, only discovered this century, it is well presented as a feature of the floor with a glass cover. Thirty to fourth minutes would be enough time to visit this site. However, given the number of stairs I would recommend checking with the museum if they have options for those with limited mobility.
